DIY Branded Thank You Cards with Microsoft Word

It’s been far too long since we have shared an awesome DIY Microsoft Word post with you, and now I absolutely feel the need. I received such a positive response from my post about Tracking Your Finances with Microsoft Excel and my post on How To Design a Wall Printable in Microsoft Word that I realized I just had to create a new tutorial for using the Microsoft Office products. Yay! Today’s post is really perfect for Small Business Owners, Etsy Sellers or really anyone who sends a whole lot of thank you cards.

PS, If you are a small business owner and you want to know why sending a personalized thank you card to your customer with their product is a good idea, check out this post by Merriweather Council: How Branding Can Delight Your CustomersA little hint, people feel really really special when someone takes the time to write them a note with their order!

So, onward to the tutorial – how to create DIY Branded Thank You Cards with Microsoft Word that will leave your customers and clients super happy and feeling the love. Also, it’s really stinking simple.

NOTE: These cards I create are for my awesome new side hustle, Samjoco Celebrations. I’ve teamed up with my mama to create unique and handcrafted party boxes with activities and adventures planned just for you.

What You Need:

  • Computer (with Microsoft Word, of course)
  • A printer <– this is the one I use *affiliate link
  • Thick-ish paper
  • Scissors / Paper cutter

Step 1: Choose your branded image.

A great image for your branded thank you card is your logo! If your logo isn’t a square like ours (see below) you can always put your logo into a square shape. The reason I chose a square is because it makes such an elegant and professional looking thank you card, plus it makes it super easy to cut out (duh!). Insert your image into your Word document. I would also take the chance now to adjust the margins to Narrow, that way you can fit even more cards on your page.

Step 2: Make your image movable.

You want to be able to freely move your image about the page. To do this, right click on the image and navigate to “Wrap Text >> In Front of Text”. Now you can move it around anywhere you want!

Step 3: Move your image to the right.

The reason I mention this as its own step is only because it’s super important your image is on the right of the page. That way, when it prints you will be able to fold your card in the traditional way (fold on the left).

Step 4: Place a Square Shape

Now we have to make the rest of the card. Place a square shape onto the page by navigating to Insert >> Shapes >> Square.

Step 5: Change the dimensions of the square to match the dimensions of the logo.

Especially if your logo / image does not have a border…you will want to change the dimensions to exactly the same as the image. NOTE: If your image DOES have a logo, you might want to make it just slightly bigger (maybe .2″ on both the height and width). That way, you can cut around the square instead of including it on the card. For example, my image was 3.5″ x 3.5″, I made the square 3.52″ x 3.52″.

The square should now be your chosen size.

Step 6: Set your desired colors, outlines etc.

This can all be done on the Format >> Shape Fill / Outline / Effects section. I made mine white with a really narrow border because I am just using the square as a cutting line.

Step 7: Copy and paste more cards!

Try to fit as many cards as you can on your sheet – let’s be ecofriendly people! Select the two objects (psst you can also group them now if you want) and copy / paste!

Step 8: Print!

Awesome, now you have successfully created multiple branded thank you cards on your sheet, it is time to print. I always opt for printing high quality (if your printer has that option). Since you’re saving so much money DIYing the cards, you want to make sure the print actually looks really lovely. Another tip…definitely use that high quality cardstock or thick paper. I haven’t had much luck finding cardstock that’s the correct size for a printer here in Japan, so I just cut to 8.5″x11″ and stick it in there.

Step 9: Cut out the cards

Cut to make a perfect rectangle! I just used scissors but some of you fancy folk will like to use a straight edge paper cutter and that’s cool too.
